Yesterday, I was at the supermarket, grabbing groceries for the week, and who do I see?

The marriage between Ava and Peter was not perfect. Even though their relationship had ups and downs, she struggled to let go of him until she found out one day that he had an affair.

Peter arrived home far past midnight, hot and exhausted, saying he was at work working on a project. Since he had been aloof for the past few weeks, Ava knew he wasn’t telling the truth. He wishes his wife could have known more about his story, no doubt.

Ava made the decision to join him the next day, despite how strange it felt. Her heart was pounding, and she second-guessed her choice. She tried to persuade herself that she ought to believe her husband more, but that was easier said than done. She wanted to be fully aware of what her intuition was telling her was happening.

When Peter made a stop away from his office and stood at a house’s door, Ava felt a pit in her stomach.

A pleasant-looking woman opened the door and hugged Peter. He came in after they had been chatting for a few minutes.

Ava’s entire world came crashing down. The clear explanation for Peter’s lack of interest in her during the last few weeks was that he was having an affair.

Brokenhearted, she thought about marrying this man she thought she knew. However, he felt unfamiliar to her at that moment, as if they had never met before.

The obvious followed. Ava decided to confront Peter, and she did that once he returned home, again way later than he did in the past.

“Are you sleeping with that woman?” Ava questioned in the hopes of learning the truth, which she secretly hoped would be different from what she perceived. Peter, though, made no attempt to refute it. It was he who admitted to having fallen in love. For him, what was meant to be a quick fix became something deeper and more significant. He acknowledged falling in love with the other woman, but he insisted he still had feelings for Ava.

Sadly, he was quick to blame Ava for his affair, claiming she was cold and unsupportive.

His remarks were sharp as knives. It was enough for Ava. He ceased talking, and she declared, “Peter, I want a divorce.”

Peter, though, disagreed with that choice. Despite his love for someone else, he didn’t want to divorce Ava. He began swearing, screaming, and telling her that he would never sign divorce papers.

Ava wept uncontrollably that evening. She believed there was no way out of the predicament she was in. She could never have imagined living under one roof with Peter, even though she knew he had emotions for someone else. She heard Peter’s footsteps and the sound of a door closing as she continued to lie with her head on the pillow and tears streaming down her cheeks.

He wasn’t in their bed the next morning. Peter was gone when she checked the entire house. Her gaze fell to the safe at that precise time. She felt compelled to open it, but it was empty. His passport, the money, the jewelry. Everything was lost.

She got in the car and headed to Peter’s mother’s house, confused. Martha was standing at the entrance, accusing Ava of being responsible for her son’s decision to emigrate. All of this would not have occurred if it weren’t for you and your ridiculous demand for a divorce. Martha cried, “You destroyed your marriage and drove away my son.

Ava couldn’t believe what she was hearing and asked Martha if she was aware that Peter was having an affair.

“So what?” stated Martha. “You ought not to have revealed your desire for a divorce to my son.” Hey, all of this is your fault.

Ava returned home after realizing Martha could not assist her in any way. The weird hush welcomed her. It felt as though nothing in the house she had shared with Peter had ever been hers. It was as though someone had broken into her own house.

After several days, Peter was nowhere to be found. He hadn’t responded to any of Ava’s emails, and his phone was off. She was anxious for closure and had begun to lose hope that she would ever see him again.

Then, while she was flipping through the TV channels, she was shocked to learn the news. Peter’s name appeared on the list of victims of a plane disaster, along with his lover’s. Ava was astounded by what she heard. Peter had passed away. There was a knock at the door as she tried to regain consciousness. It was Martha, wailing and accusing Ava of causing her son’s death.

In the present, some two years following the terrible event, Ava traveled to a nearby city since she felt she needed a change. She never imagined that her life would change again, but because the afternoon was quiet, she made the decision to run groceries.

She was perusing the label of a product she wasn’t sure she should buy when she noticed a familiar face. Her heart raced when she noticed how closely the man standing next to her resembled Peter. She said, “Peter,” but the man did not answer. That similarity was too strong to be coincidental.

With her legs shaking, she decided to go after him, when there, just around one of the aisles, she spotted Martha.

How was this possible to be true, and what was happening? Ava was stunned beyond belief. Peter looked around when she called his name. “I can explain everything,” he continued, staring directly into Ava’s eyes.

He pleaded with Ava to get in his car, telling her the entire tale. Reluctantly, she consented. As the three of them made their way to Peter’s house, he revealed to Ava that, although his lover had perished in the plane accident, he had actually survived and had made his way out, creating a new identity for himself with the money he had stolen from her. After that, he made sure to get his mother tickets as she gave him a fresh start in life.

Ava recalled all her tears and the grief she had been filled in after she learned of Peter’s passing.

A few days later, Martha went down the basement. If Ava pledged that she wouldn’t harm Peter in any way, she would let her to go. Ava promised Martha that she would never inform anyone that Peter was still alive; all she wanted was to get home. She was no longer concerned about Peter.

Martha released Ava because she was afraid her son would get into problems for having her around the house.

Ava hurried over to start Peter’s car. Ava drove as quickly as she could, but Martha chased after her and instructed her to get out of the car and walk to the closest road. Sadly, she was not strong enough to travel too far. She passed out while driving and crashed into a tree. Then she passed out, and the next thing she knew, she was lying in a hospital bed, being questioned by an officer about the accident and about Peter, who they had managed to locate with the help of the car’s license plates.

“He has been posing as someone else. After the supposed plane tragedy, he adopted a new moniker. Officer Daniels informed Ava, “We’re still working on putting all the pieces together.”

She told him everything she knew and reassured him that she really thought he died in the plane crash.
